Polysomnography

An attended sleep study that records multiple physiological channels—including brain activity, eye movements, muscle activity, breathing, oxygen, and heart rhythm—to evaluate sleep stages and sleep disorders.

Definition

Polysomnography, commonly abbreviated PSG, is a multichannel clinical sleep study and the reference method for measuring sleep architecture and evaluating many sleep disorders. It records signals that consumer wearables generally do not measure directly. A typical study can include electroencephalography for brain activity, electro-oculography for eye movements, electromyography for muscle tone, electrocardiography, airflow, respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, body position, and additional channels. Trained scoring applies standardized rules to classify sleep stages, arousals, apneas, hypopneas, and other events. Consumer wearables infer sleep stages mainly from movement and cardiovascular signals. That makes them suitable for scalable longitudinal tracking but not interchangeable with PSG. Even when a wearable estimate resembles a sleep-study value, the measurement frame is different. Sleepgenic uses polysomnography as the clinical comparison boundary. Its wearable dataset is valuable because it is continuous and longitudinal; PSG is valuable because it measures the physiological channels required for clinical classification. The two answer different questions.
