Latent strain is a Sleepgenic analytical concept describing a divergence between the score layer and the physiology layer — specifically, the state in which composite sleep scores remain stable or strong while the underlying sleep architecture measurably weakens. The word latent does the defining work: the strain is genuinely present, but it has not yet surfaced into the composite sleep score, which is the number a reader is most likely to check. It is detectable only if the physiological layer — REM duration, deep sleep, HRV, sleep stress — is read on its own rather than collapsed into the single composite figure. Latent strain arises because a sleep score is a composite of several inputs, and a decline in one component can be offset by stability in the others, leaving the headline number nearly unchanged. A stage such as REM can thin substantially while the score holds, because REM is a small enough share of the night to be absorbed in the average. The score stays flat. The architecture does not. This is why Sleepgenic treats a stable score as a starting point for interpretation rather than a verdict: stable score with stable architecture is genuine stability, while stable score with thinning architecture is latent strain — the early part of a sequence, not a steady state. Latent strain is not a crisis state. It is an early state. A body under latent strain is typically still producing acceptable scores and often still functioning well day to day. Its significance is directional: architecture declining across consecutive weeks, against an unchanged load, is a trajectory, and catching that trajectory early — before the score layer drops into agreement with the physiology layer — is the specific value of reading the layers separately. In the Sleepgenic framework, latent strain frequently precedes the surfacing phase, in which the score layer falls into line with the weakening physiology it had been masking. Identifying latent strain is therefore an early-warning function: it names the strain while it is still hidden, so the decline that may follow is anticipated rather than surprising. It is a pattern that emerges only from reading the score layer and the physiology layer against each other across a multi-week window.
