A home sleep apnea test, or HSAT, is a clinical diagnostic pathway for evaluating suspected obstructive sleep apnea in appropriately selected adults. It records fewer channels than attended polysomnography and is interpreted within a clinical evaluation. Depending on the system, HSAT may measure airflow, respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, heart rate, and related respiratory signals. Because it usually does not measure brain activity, it may estimate recording time rather than direct total sleep time, and it is not appropriate for every patient or every suspected sleep disorder. A consumer wearable is not automatically an HSAT. A smartwatch or ring may estimate some overlapping signals, but it has different validation, intended use, sensors, sampling, and clinical oversight. A consumer “breathing disruption” feature should not be described as a home sleep-apnea test unless the specific product and use have appropriate regulatory and clinical status.
