Duration–recovery divergence is a Sleepgenic analytical concept describing a disagreement between sleep quantity and recovery state. It appears when total sleep time or a wearable's Duration Score rises while one or more supporting recovery signals move in an unfavorable direction — for example, lower HRV, higher resting heart rate, higher Sleep Stress, reduced REM, lower SpO2, greater fragmentation, or a lower Recovery Score. The divergence matters because long sleep is commonly treated as proof of good recovery. In reality, a longer sleep window can reflect increased recovery demand rather than completed recovery. The body may remain asleep longer because the preceding load was unusually high, while the autonomic, cardiovascular, respiratory, or architectural layers remain under strain. Duration describes opportunity and demand; it does not independently establish outcome. Sleepgenic identifies the pattern through the Three-Layer Interpretation Model. The Score Layer shows whether the wearable rewarded duration and how Overall and Recovery Scores behaved. The Physiology Layer tests whether HRV, resting heart rate, Sleep Stress, sleep stages, oxygenation, and continuity confirm recovery. The Context Layer identifies what the body was recovering from, including training load, altitude, travel, illness, heat, or other stressors. When duration rises but the physiology layer weakens, the disagreement becomes the signal. The clearest Sleepgenic field example occurred during Weeks 10 and 11 of 2026. Long sleep and high Duration Scores coincided with sharply weaker Recovery Scores, lower HRV and SpO2, elevated resting heart rate, and elevated Sleep Stress during a multi-summit high-altitude road trip. In Week 12, duration remained high while the supporting physiology rebounded, showing the difference between recovery demand and recovery completion. Duration–recovery divergence is not a metric reported by Garmin or another wearable, and it is not a diagnosis. It is a longitudinal interpretation pattern derived from reading multiple wearable signals against personal baseline and real-world context.
