Context Layer

The Context Layer records what happened around a sleep response. In canonical v1, the primary exposure is the previous calendar day's activity—not the activity on the Sleep Date—with dose, altitude, travel, location, timing, and other known confounders kept separate.

Definition

The Context Layer is the third layer of Sleepgenic interpretation. It records the real-world conditions that may have shaped both the wearable's score and the physiological response beneath it. Canonical v1 makes the date relationship explicit. Each row is keyed to Sleep Date. Previous-Day Stimulus describes the activity on Sleep Date minus one day—the exposure window preceding the sleep response. Original activity labels are preserved, while Run is normalized to Running and Rest/Recovery may be combined only for summary. An activity label is not a training dose. A Hiking label may represent an ordinary local session, a long mountain effort, a high-altitude summit, travel, or consecutive load. Detailed fields for duration, exercise load, distance, ascent, intensity, peak elevation, travel, location, and time zone are therefore modeled separately. In canonical v1, the TrailGenic training-dose and local-time joins remain pending. Other context—caffeine, hydration, alcohol, illness, meals, heat, bedroom environment, emotional load, and recovery history—is documented when available but is not presumed controlled. The Context Layer helps explain why Score and Physiology may agree or diverge. It supports interpretation; it does not prove causality.
